On 8th March the Year 3 secondary school students gave presentation for their schoolmates about Maria Skłodowska – Curie’s life and activities. This event was held with the aim to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Polish Nobel Laureate.
The Year 3 students did their best to present Maria Skłodowska – Curie‘s life and achievements in the most interesting way. Apart from her scientific achievements they presented a lot of interesting information about her life e.g she was one of the first women to hold a driving license. She obtained this document with the aim to drive a lorry to reach the most jeopardized positions near Verdun with a portable X-rays stations to help wounded soldiers.
7th November 2017 marks the 150th anniversary of Maria Skłodowska – Curie’s birth, who was the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize and the only one who has been awarded this prize twice so far.
In 1903, as the first woman in Europe, she obtained the Doctor of Science degree. In 1906 she was awarded the title of professor, and as the first woman appointed to hold the position of the Head of her own Faculty at the Sorbonne University. Thanks to her discoveries in 1905, she managed to cure certain varieties of cancer and popularize X-rays. She also contributed to the foundation of the Radium Institute in Paris and Warsaw where she donated 1 gramme of radium. Maria Skłodowska – Curie’s devoted her entire life to science. She has been recognized as the most influential woman of the last two centuries.
